Agriculture Secretary Bernie Fondevilla (center) keys in the computer to officially launch the Nokia Data Gathering Solution (NDGS) using mobile phones for data gathering to bring fast and accurate field data for further analysis and actions.  The first in the world as far as agriculture sector is concerned, DA has partnered with Nokia and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to enable data collection on mobile devices and the transmission of the results for analysis in near real-time. Witnessing the launching as one of the highlights of the   DA’s 112th anniversary are (from left):, WWF corporate relationship manager Poch Ceballos, WWF VP for Marketing Reggie Olalia, H.E. The Department of Agriculture (DA), leading cellular phone maker Nokia and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines) are pioneering in the country the use of the Nokia Data Gathering solution, which will enable collection and sharing of critical data anytime and anywhere in the Philippines.

“The applications are practically boundless - from tracking regional temperatures to comparing provincial fish yields. Eventually we wish to apply the technology to health, agriculture, education, emergency services, census and so forth,” said Greg Elphinston, Director, Corporate Social Investment, Nokia Finland. “Nokia E71 mobile phones with the Nokia Data Gathering solution will now be deployed to 100 pre-identified areas. Our ambition is to service all 1,500 Philippine municipalities within a decade,”

The Project was a set of activities to give proper direction and set a time-bound implementation plan for the transition of the Department of Agriculture (DA) into a market service-oriented agency. This was as envisioned by the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act (AFMA) of 1997 and as articulated by the DA in its own strategic plans.

The AFMIS is a Web-based system consisting of an integrated (National) and cluster-based (Local) market information systems that integrates various information resources of the Market Development Cluster (MDC) agencies into a single database and application system.

Its goal is to take advantage of existing information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as the Internet and Short Messaging System (SMS), to strengthen the delivery of market information services in the country.
