The government is eyeing the use of “uraro” as a potential wheat flour substitute to help reduce Philippines’ food wheat import amounting to more than $200 million yearly.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is looking into the expansion potential of arrowroot, popularly known as uraro, even as a unique community participation technique has raised yield of uraro tubers.

This is by an average of by 100 percent from four metric tons (MT) per hectare to eight MT per hectare in a pilot program of DA’s Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) in Catanauan, Quezon.

Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija – The 26th anniversary of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), the country`s lead in rice science and development, will kick off the month-long celebration of the National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM) this November.

Set on Nov. 8, the anniversary will highlight the Save Rice, Save Lives pledge to gain public’s commitment in conserving rice to help the country achieve rice self-sufficiency in 2013.

A goat-based Rural Enterprise Development (RED) program can raise by more than 80 percent a farm’s goat population and generate more income for the P13.2 billion industry of specialty chevon meat.

The multi agency-led RED-Innovative Goat Production System (IGPS) has successfully raised goat population in its Phase 2 trial farms of nine farmers association in Region 1.  These are in La Union (Bacnotan, San Juan, and Bauang) and Pangasinan ((Balungao, Bayambang, and Bautista).
