Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), the country’s lead agency in rice research and development, pinpointed rice production inputs crucial in attaining rice self-sufficiency by 2013 in spite of the country’s low area harvested per capita in rice.

Dr. Flordeliza Bordey, program leader of the Institute’s Impact Evaluation, Policy Research, and Advocacy program found that irrigation, adoption of hybrid and modern inbred varieties, participation in training programs, use of high quality seeds, and machine ownership, could significantly increase the country’s rice production.

Supporting the vow of Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala to produce enough rice in three years, the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is rolling its sleeves to implement its medium and long-term corporate plans after its Board of Trustees approved the Institute’s programs for 2011-2016.

Following series of stakeholder’s consultation-workshop, the country’s lead agency in rice science and development will be in full swing executing projects that will enable rice adapt to climate change, increase yield in the irrigated lowland, develop nutraceutical rice products, and package location-specific technologies.

A program focusing on determining the complex interrelationship between the development of rice industry and national economy is also in place.

Atty. Ronilo A. Beronio, PhilRice executive director, said the programs were created not only to increase farmers’ yield but also to improve farmers’ nutrition and economic status.
