Fresh mango from the area of Davao del Sur will now be accepted by the Australian government.   In a report submitted to the Agriculture Secretary Proceso J.  Alcala, Plant Industry Director Clarito M.Baron said that Biosecurity Australia advisory dated 13 August 2010 announces the extension of existing policy for the importation of fresh mango fruits from the Philippines and inclusion of other additional growing area of Davao del Sur in Mindanao.

       The prolonged dry spell due to El Nino phenomenon exacted its toll on the Philippine agriculture sector during the first six months of 2010, as it contracted by 2.59 percent (%). 

       Of the four subsectors, crops suffered most as it dipped by 6.72%. It contributes roughly one-half (45%) to total agricultural production. 

       Production of palay (unmilled rice), the country’s major staple, decreased by 10.24%  to 6.62 million metric tons (MT) during the first six months of 2010 versus 7.37 million MT for the same six-month period in 2009. 

       Likewise, corn harvest dipped by 24.95% to 2.42 million MT, from 3.22 million MT in 2009. Sugarcane yield was also down by 21.86%. 

       The fisheries subsector — comprising 28% of total agricultural production — also barely grew, contracting by 0.11%.
